Channel Six has a radio licence application pending since 1999

Dear Editor,

I write with respect to the ruling by the Honourable Chancellor of the Judiciary Carl Singh on Wednesday last as it concerns the National Frequency Management Unit (NFMU) and the granting of radio licences.

Editor whilst the ruling concerns the application for a radio licence by Anthony Vieira, I have applications pending in the NFMU since 1999 and follow-up letters were sent on April and December of 2001. Even before this when Mr. Seo Persaud was the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the NFMU our intent to have a radio station was clearly stated.

Presently the exact date of my application cannot be stated. This is due to the fire that engulfed and subsequently destroyed the CNS building and in the process my records. Notwithstanding this, the NFMU, the Office of the Prime Minister and the Office of the President do have copies of our initial applications and follow-up letter.

The recent statement by the NFMU that no further applications for radio licences will be accepted is most heartening but let us hope that politics will not stick its head into the decision to approve, if any, radio licence.

I do hope that the honourable Chancellor’s ruling will be adhered to by the NFMU and licence applications would be processed in the order they were submitted.

Also I would like to state that the granting of a radio licence to me will be beneficial to the nation as a whole as I intend to provide a meaningful avenue for employment.

This radio station will be for the people of this country as programming will be cheaper. Children, schools, religious bodies, political parties, NGOs and other bodies will be facilitated at a cheaper cost and some even free.

Yours faithfully,
Chandra Narine Sharma
