National youth sprint champion Triston Joseph enhanced his growing reputation by comfortably capturing the sprint double yesterday to set the tone for Friday’s inter-zone championships and next month’s national championships during the  North Georgetown (District 11) inter-school track event at Camp Ayanganna ground.

In the showpiece 100m event, Joseph of the Government Technical Institute (GTI),  got out of the blocks hard and had the race in control by the end of his drive phase before going into cruise control by the 75-metre mark to register a time of 10.6 seconds.

He left Kareem Critchlow of Queen’s College (11.1s) and Andrew Jarvis (11.3s) struggling for the second and third spots respectively.

Later in the afternoon Joseph returned a time of 22.1s in the 200m after making up the stagger on his other competitors by the first turn.

And,  in the under-14 category,  Shemaine Daniels of Richard Ishmael and the Running Brave Athletics Club,  showed some class when she powered away in the 200m in a time of 26.9s.

Celeste De Florimonte of QC and Tia Peters of Kingston High School finished a distant second and third in 31s and 31.2s respectively.

Malclom Wills won the male category while Rondell Gibbons and Joshua Hunte settled for second and third.

Robin Thomas of QC also ran a good race in the under-20 200m but it was the female under-16 200m that went down to the wire with Sarah Martin of QC running a tactically better race, and Faith Tyler of RI that sparked some controversy in the decision.

Martin, though evidently tiring down the stretch, shared the first position with Tyler who finished harder and many thought she was the winner as her torso crossed the line first. This caused some dissent among some teachers who were on the line.

On the other hand, in the 1500m QC’s Joshua Griffith (4:34s) ran an impressive race to beat GTI’s Steve Petrie, who was unable to contend with Griffith’s finishing speed.

Fiaz Mustapha of QC was third.

Jason Ray Khalil of Marian Academy had a good showing in the under-16 1500m, running powerfully from whistle to finish to record  5:01 seconds. Khalil is also a badminton and squash player.

Akeem Sawh  was second and Seon Semple third.

Meanwhile, up to press time points had not yet been tabulated because the events finished later than anticipated. Competition will continue today and tomorrow and there will be a rest day on Thursday.

The Inter-Zones will end the District’s athletics sports  meeting  and next month the National Schools Track and Field and Swimming Championships will be staged in Albion, Berbice.
