Alpha United continues unbeaten march

The marauding Alpha “the Hammer” United football team  received a scare from Rosignol United but continued its unbeaten march while the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) humbled Linden’s Bakewell Topp XX in two important matches of the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) Super League played Sunday.

Alpha United squeezed past Rosignol United 2-1 at the Blairmont Community Centre ground after the West Berbice side had taken the lead midway in the first half.

The Rosignol side,  who had defeated one of Georgetown’s top club Sunburst Camptown a few weeks ago at the same venue,  took the lead when lethal striker Gladwin Johnson found the back of the net in the 27th minute of play.

However, Alpha, who were beaten in the Futsal Indoor final the previous night at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall, ensured that they remained in the match when Abassy McPherson equalised before the end of half time.

A draw would have been a respectable feat for the Rosignol side who went into the match in  second position but despite their efforts to contain Alpha the Georgetown-based side scored the winning goal in time added on through Wendell St Hill to take an unassailable lead in the tournament.

They are on 17 points while Rosignol remain on nine points.

At the Mackenzie Sports Club ground in Linden, the Guyana Defence Force chalked up some valuable points when they defeated the youthful Topp XX 3-1 after a 2-0 lead at half time.

Shawn Arthur sent the soldiers into the lead in the 38th minute from a penalty kick before Stellon David booted home his team’s second goal in the 44th minute.

Topp XX pulled one back when Michael Crandon converted in the 86th minute but the Army side who had beaten Buxton United in their previous encounter sealed the issue when Frederick Boyce scored in the 91st minute.

The Army are in third position with 10 points behind leaders Alpha United and Camptown 11 after last weekend’s results. Topp XX remain on seven points.

In the other match of the double header card, Upper Demerara female team brushed aside Berbice 2-0 in the National Women’s league.

Ateka Simeon sent her team in 65th minute before Stacey Hoyte scored in the 69th to land another defeat for the Berbice side.

And, at the Bartica Community Development Centre ground, West Demerara’s Seawall FC edged Bartica’s Liquid Gold 2-1.

Seawall FC scored first through a Clement Browne strike in the 31st minute but Liquid Gold gained a welcome strike in the 58th minute through Whitney Welcome.

However a penalty put paid to Liquid Gold’s efforts after Browne was fouled and Darvis Garraway converted in the 67th minute.

And, over at the Georgetown Cricket Club ground at Bourda, Sunburst Camptown shone brightly in a 2-0 win over Buxton United through goals from Lance Rolston and Telson Mc Kinnon in the 43rd and 70th minutes respectively.

In the final match of the round, Victoria Kings defeated Upper Demerara’s Milerock  2-0.

Scoring for Victoria Kings were Rashleigh Morrison and Donald Lutchman.
