Mitchell walks to victory in five-mile event

Rudoldph Mitchell warmed up for his marathon race/walk event later this month by coasting to victory in the William France-organized five-mile walk on Saturday.

The bare-footed walker, who is also preparing for a number of international events, won the race from a small contingent of walkers in a time of 36:09 seconds. The route was from the Two Brothers Gas Station in Eccles to Papa John’s Ice ream Parlour and Bar in Mocha Arcadia.  Richard Lewis was second and recorded a time of 39:12.2 seconds whilst Jeremy Cornelius clocked 41:18 seconds for third position. Brian Roberts rounded out the fourth position in a time of 44:18 seconds.

After the event, Mitchell said that preparations for his Barbados meet later in the year in the sand hills on the Linden Soesdyke Highway were progressing smoothly and that he was satisfied with his execution of the race. He said that he paced the race well from the beginning and that he hopes to boost his performance in other race meets before his first local marathon and the other in Barbados and Brazil in February.

Mitchell was presented with a trophy donated  by President Bharrat Jagdeo. He and the other top finishers, who also received trophies, collected hampers donated by Nigel’s Supermarket.
