Soldier remanded over Enid Sharpe fatal accident

Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson yesterday ordered that a GDF Lance Corporal be remanded to prison after he was involved in the motor accident at Amelia’s Ward, Linden in May that claimed the life of a woman who was riding a motorcycle.

Delroy Mitchell, a twenty-four-year-old father of two of Third Street, Alberttown pleaded not guilty to the charge of causing death by dangerous driving when he appeared at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court.

He denied that on May 22, at Amelia’s Ward Public Road, Linden, he drove Guyana Defence Force motor pickup,  DFB 1469 in a manner dangerous to the public, resulting in an accident that caused the death of 38-year-old Enid Sharpe.

His lawyer, Melissa Stewart, applied for reasonable bail for him on the grounds that he had no previous brushes with the law and since he is in the disciplined force he poses no risk of flight.

However, Prosecutor Kevin London stated that on the day in question at about 7:30 am, Mitchell was proceeding west along the Amelia’s Ward Public Road in the motor pick-up on the southern carriageway when he collided with Sharpe who was proceeding in front of him in the same direction on motorcycle CE3406.

He said that the force of the collision threw Sharpe off the motorcycle and onto the road resulting in her sustaining severe injuries.  He noted that Sharpe was pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital.

The prosecutor also stated that the police had conducted investigations into the matter and advice was sought and received from the Director of Public Prosecutions that resulted in Mitchell being arrested and charged.

The prosecutor also said that he was ready to proceed with the case and he had no objections to Mitchell’s bail application.

The magistrate then transferred the matter to the Christianburg Magistrate’s Court for today.

Reports are that the collision had caused Sharpe’s leg to be severed.
