Over 60 students graduated last Saturday when the Wakenaam Computer School held its third graduation ceremony at the Wakenaam Masjid Annex, Wakenaam Island, a news release stated.
Vice-Chancellor of the University of Guyana, Dr Tota Mangar, in delivering the feature address congratulated the students and the school for “helping to develop the country.” He was also in high praise of Muslim Aid of London, the funding agency of the school, which was opened in 2006.
Dr Mangar also pledged continued support to the school by the University of Guyana through its outreach programme.
Also present at the graduation ceremony was Manager of UG’s Information Technology Centre, Raymond Khan, who expressed his satisfaction at the work of the school. He urged the inclusion of computer repairs as a course at the school so persons on the island would be trained to diagnose computer problems and do repairs.
And Secretary of the Muslim Youth League Hakeem Khan through whom the school was established spoke of the need for the students to now contribute to the society using their newly-gained skills.
He noted that the school which is the only institution of its kind to be established on the island also offers the wider community a range of other services and it is open to both Muslims and non-Muslims, the release added.
