(Barbados Nation) – Commissioner of Police Darwin Dottin has ordered a full-scale internal investigation into the theft of two police Glock guns.
His comments followed the arrest and charging on Wednesday of Police Constable Ron Connell in connection with the theft of one of the guns from the Holetown Police Station.
Connell, 29, of Golden Mile, St Peter, appeared at the Holetown Magistrates’ Court yesterday to answer the charge.
“I’ve ordered an internal inquiry into our procedures to find out how something like that could happen and to prevent the likelihood of any recurrence,” he told the Daily Nation.
The police chief also disclosed that investigators “were making good progress” in connection with the theft of the second missing gun. This is but the latest in a series of incidents involving policemen who have been charged and gone before the law courts.
Just last week, Constable Calvin Grosvenor, of Airy Hill, St Joseph, was charged with kidnapping a 16-year-old girl from Park Road, Bush Hall, St Michael.
He was ordered to report to the District “F” Station every Monday, Wednesday and Friday and had his passport confiscated. Bail was set at $5,000.
Three weeks ago, another police constable, Andrew Maynard, of Browne’s Gap, Sargeants Village, Christ Church, appeared at the District “B” Boarded Hall Magistrates’ Court charged with rape and was granted bail of $7,500.
Maynard, who was not required to plead to the indictable offence, returns to court on January 28.
