Banks DIH on board for powerlifting c/ships

Sunday’s Power Stout National Powerlifting competition will be a dress rehearsal for Guyana’s hosting of the fourth  Caribbean Powerlifting championships to be staged in March 2010.

Two international officials were due in Guyana last evening to supervise Sunday’s National competition at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall and to inspect venues ahead of next year’s major event, officials of the Guyana Amateur Powerlifting Federation (GAPF) disclosed at a Press Conference yesterday to announce Banks DIH’s sponsorship of this weekend’s event under the Power Stout brand.

Gordon Spencer, GAPF General Secretary disclosed that Robert Keller, General Secretary of the North American Powerlifting Federation and a representative of the International powelifting Federation  whose name was not released will be here to offer tips and conduct training  and examinations for local officials. Most of Guyana’s leading Powerlifters will be on show on Sunday at the championships which will get cracking at 10:00 hours.

They will be under the microscope as they vie for selection on the national team for next year’s regional championships which will be held from March 18th-21st.

Spencer said that the weigh-in of competitors will be held between 07:30-09:00 hours. Competitors will compete in squats, bench press and dead lift in eight weight divisions.

Among the big names expected are John Edwards, Mervyn Moses, Winston Stoby, Randolph Morgan, Vijai Rahim, Colin Chesney and Errol Henry.

Peter Green, GAPF President said that plans are well underway for next year’s regional championships.

He expressed gratitude to Banks DIH for the company’s continued support for powerlifting in Guyana.

Michael Fung, Banks DIH Power Stout Consultant disclosed that the local beverage giants  were pleased to be on board in Sunday’s national championships and his company  will be involved in a big way in next year’s regional event.

“Banks DIH is committed to the development of sport in Guyana and come March 2010 Banks will be involved in the Caribbean championships in a big way,” Fung disclosed.

Fung presented the trophies on behalf of Banks DIH  that will be up for grabs at the national championships at yesterday’s briefing which was also attended by GAPF Committee member Winston Stoby and Banks DIH Communications Manager Troy Peters.
