Chanderpaul returns to score half century

Shivanarine Chanderpaul in his first game on home soil since returning from Durham, scored a polished 51 yesterday for Assad Fudadin’s XI in the fourth practice match ahead of  the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) Twenty20 Festival at the Guyana National Stadium today.

Chanderpaul and Travis Dowlin, who opened the batting, started off slowly but picked up the tempo after the third over.

Fudadin’s  eventually reached 163-5 from 20 overs. Chanderpaul’s half century included five boundaries and two sixes while Dowlin played the supporting  role to perfection scoring 35 that included five boundaries.

Christopher Barnwell, batting down the order, instantly upped the scoring rate significantly with his power hitting and good running between the wickets. He scored 30. Bowling for Steven Jacobs’ XI,  Mahendra Nagamootoo and Esaun Crandon  had two wickets each while Deon Ferrier picked up a solitary wicket.

In reply, Jacobs’ XI made 153-7 before their overs expired losing the game by 11 runs. Ramnaresh Sarwan made 23 and Ferrier scored an explosive 24. The team got starts from all their batsmen but none went on to get a significant score.

Veerasammy Permaul and Royston Crandon picked up three and two wickets respectively.

Subsequently, the 15-man team was selected for today’s game against Barbados at 18:00 hours and their game tomorrow; the first match which starts at 14:00 hours will see Jamaica playing the United Chargers of the USA. Jonathan Foo and Delon Heyliger got a surprise call to the team while the more seasoned Ferrier was overlooked.

Sarwan was retained as the captain with Sewnarine Chattergoon as his deputy.

The selectors also stated that the team to contest the WICB regional 50-over tournament will be selected tomorrow night after the final of the Twenty20 festival. The festival is being run to raise funds for the development of cricket in Guyana. 

Admission to the ground today is $1000 and tomorrow patrons will have to pay $1500.
