When the WICB President’s Cup limited overs tournament begins on Wednesday Guyana will be without some of its usual players who were dropped by the national selectors over the week-end.

Mahendra Nagamootoo, Leon Johnson, Derwin Christian and Steven Jacobs were not named in the Guyana 14-man squad named by the national selectors Saturday night for the upcoming President’s Cup one-day competition.

However, wicketkeeper Delbert Hicks will get a chance to make his debut in the national side when they play the Leeward Islands at the Enmore ground on Wednesday.

Nagamootoo who was included in the  25-man squad played in the practice matches and for Guyana in the GCB Festival which ended Saturday night.

He picked up two wickets in the final against Jamaica and one wicket the previous night against Barbados.

His exclusion will therefore mean that Devendra Bishoo and Veerasammy Permaul will continue their jobs as specialist spinners in the squad.

Sewnarine Chattergoon, Narsingh Deonarine, Royston Crandon and Deon Ferrier, also found favour with the selectors and will complement the two frontline spinners.

The miserly medium pacer Esaun Crandon will spearhead the fast bowling ranks with Trevon Garraway and Christopher Barnwell offering support.

The batting lineup is one of the most solid on paper with the inclusion Shivnarine Chanderpaul, Ramnaresh Sarwan, who has been confirmed Captain and Travis Dowlin. There are also Chattergoon, who will be opening the batting, Deonarine, who is in top form and will bat in the middle order, Royston Crandon, Barnwell and Fudadin, if he is in the final 11.

When Stabroek Sport caught up with some members of the team they exuded confidence ahead of the tournament and declared that they were fully prepared. Some of the more senior players stated that the encampment period was good and they will be looking to set the example for the younger players in the squad.
