Man, 52, remanded on charges of raping minor

Typewriter technician Michael Martin Crawford of Lot 9 Martin Luther Scheme, New Amsterdam, Berbice, was refused bail after two indictable charges of rape were read to him by Magistrate Adela Nagamootoo in the New Amsterdam Court yesterday.

The 52-year-old father of four adult children is alleged to have raped a 12-year-old girl.

Police said that the child was known to the defendant and would go to his premises to pick fruits. After which, he would invite the child to his bedroom where he allegedly performed the unlawful acts. These acts were never reported, police said, because the suspect threatened the child.

It was not until a relative of the child became suspicious at her behaviour that the acts became known, the court was told.

A report was made at the Central Police Station in New Amsterdam and Crawford was arrested at his home.

Meanwhile, particulars of the offence said that between January 1, 2009 and November 12 last at Martin Luther Scheme, the defendant allegedly had carnal knowledge with a girl under 13 years of age.

The offence is alleged to have been repeated on November 13 last.

The matter is set for fixture on November 30.
