Robbery suspects nabbed near harbour bridge

Police ranks at the Demerara Harbour Bridge who responded promptly to a robbery report managed to capture two suspects, one of whom had a stolen cellular phone in his possession.

Police said that it was the quick response by the ranks that led to the capture of the men, who along with another had earlier attacked and robbed Leon Rampersaud of La Grange, West Bank Demerara of a Motorola cell phone valued $35,000 and $3,000 cash.

According to a release, Rampersaud was walking along the La Grange public road around 20:45 hours when he was attacked by three men who slapped him about his face and took away the cash and cell phone before escaping on foot.

Rampersaud and his father subsequently went to the Demerara Harbour Bridge where they informed the members of a mobile police patrol. Based on the descriptions given, the police ranks later confronted the three men who were seen walking along the roadway approaching the bridge. Two of them were arrested while the third managed to escape.

The man’s cell phone was recovered in the possession of one of the men.

Charges will be laid shortly, the release added.
