Miners host appreciation ceremony

The Guyana Gold and Diamond Miners Association (GGDMA) recently held an appreciation ceremony to honour persons who contributed to the building fund for its North Road, Bourda office.

In his address to miners, stakeholders and officials at the ceremony hosted on Saturday, President of the GGDMA Norman McLean said it was a great year for the mining community. Accord-ing to a press release he urged them to challenge themselves to break a declaration record with 300,000 ounces this year.

GGDMA Executive Direc-tor Edward Shields whom miners referred to as the backbone of the Association was honoured with a special award for his outstanding work in support of the Association.
The Association was established in 1982 with the aim of promoting and protecting miners’ rights, interests and welfare.

McLean said of the six challenges the GGDMA has this year the greatest will be to complement the president’s initiative on the Low Carbon Development Stra-tegy while trying to maintain the level of production and make a meaningful contribution to the national economy.
