A single mother, her child and teenage brother were left homeless on Thursday night after they returned home to find their one-flat, one-bedroom wooden home on fire.
Latoya Edinboro, 22, told Stabroek News yesterday via telephone that she left her home just after 7 pm that day to take her three-year-old for a walk. The electricity was out when she left her North Ruimveldt Squatting Area, Georgetown home.
“Is while I walking back home I see my house on fire,” Edinboro said.
The young woman said that she was the sole provider for her child and sibling. Their mother, she explained, died last year and left them living in the house. Presently, Edinboro and her family have nowhere to stay.
“Wherever night catch we that is where we been sleeping,” a distressed Edinboro said. “I don’t know what coulda start the fire but all my money and everything I had get burned up.”
The woman said she has since contacted an organization which helps fire victims but had to wait until they have time to visit the remains of her home.
“I am the only person who can provide for my brother and child and now that we have nothing left I am not sure what to do,” the distressed woman said.
