-company contributes G$875,000 to Special Olympics Guyana

Republic Bank (Guyana) Limited has proved that they have ‘The Power to Make a Difference” when they presented a sponsorship cheque worth G$875,000 to Special Olympics Guyana (SOG) on Monday for the hosting of their upcoming Special Olympics Games.

Ten organizations throughout Guyana are scheduled to participate  at the Special Olympics Games which encompasses three days of competition in sports disciplines such as  athletics, football, aquatics, table tennis and bocce.

The games will commence next Wednesday and will continue on February 26 and March 1.

Chairman of the SOG organization, Affeeze Khan,  extended his gratitude to the management and staff of Republic Bank Ltd.

According to Khan, the bank did not hesitate when approached for sponsorship of the event.

The game will see male and female athletes compete in categories  ranging from 8 – 11 to  30 and over.
Among the organizations scheduled to participate are Ptolemy Reid Rehabilitation Centre, David Rose School for the Handicapped, Special Needs School EBD, Kuru Kururu CBR Programme, St. Barnabas Special School, New Amsterdam Special Needs School, Linden Centre for the Disabled, Region  #3 CBR Progamme, Open Doors Centre and East Bank CBR.
Football and bocce are billed for the National Gymnasium while table tennis will take place at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall on the opening day.
The following day the aquatic events will commence at the Colgrain Swimming Pool  with the track and field segment of the games taking place on March 1 at the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) ground.
Special Olympics Guyana is a voluntary Non-Governmental Organization who provides year round training and competitions in a variety of Olympic type sports for persons eight years and over with intellectual disabilities.
During the games athletes will be under the scope for a team will be shortlisted for training in preparation for the 2011 International Summer Special Olympics Games in Athens, Greece.
