PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad, CMC – Former Young West Indies captain Steven Jacobs hit a half-century to help Guyana post a decent total against Trinidad & Tobago on the second day of their WICB Regional four-day match yesterday.
The right-handed Jacobs scored 54 as Guyana, continuing from their overnight 129 for three, was dismissed for 282 with leg-spinner Imran Khan claiming five for 42.
T&T closed at 53 for one, losing Imran Khan cheaply for seven but enterprising teenaged opener Adrian Barath was unbeaten on 29.
Playing at Queen’s Park Oval, West Indies batsman Sewnarine Chattergoon converted his overnight 52 into 68 while captain Travis Dowlin hit 42 to contribute to Guyana’s batting effort.
The experienced pair, batting in overcast and gloomy conditions, played cautiously and extended their partnership for the fourth wicket to 69 before being separated.
Chattergoon’s marathon innings finally ended when he was well caught by wicketkeeper Gibran Mohammed off fast bowler Rayad Emrit after facing 213 balls in 332 minutes at the crease. He struck six fours and a six.
Rain at 11.10 am forced an early lunch and when play resumed at 1.22 pm, Khan got the important wicket of Dowlin at 184 for five, caught by Atiba Allert at mid-on with the bowler’s first delivery after facing 127 balls and striking three fours.
Khan picked up his second scalp when he had Assad Fudadin stumped for 22 and Derwin Christian joined Jacobs to add 30 important runs before Christian departed, caught at square-leg by Sherwin Ganga off fast bowler Navin Stewart (2-74) for 11.
In between the clatter of wickets, Jacobs reached his half-century in 61 minutes off 62 balls with six fours and a six.
He eventually fell to Khan, becoming one of two wickets to fall in the bowler’s 11th over.
