Mackenzie High retains title as Inter-Secondary School champions

Class act! Tishun Bentinck who usually dominates the middle and long distance races won the 800m, 1500m, 5000m and the road race.

The Mackenzie High School (MHS) kept its banner flying high at this year’s Linden Inter-Secondary and Inter-Primary School championships which ended on Friday.

Hundreds of Lindeners came out to support the annual event particularly the popular middle distance and relay races, which concluded three days of athletics at the Mackenzie Sports Club ground.

Nine Linden high schools competed in the competition prior to the National Championships set for Albion, Corentyne next month. However, the secondary school cycling events and long distance races for both secondary and primary levels are still on the roster.

On the first day, the ‘heats’ were held and on the second and third days the sprint finals and field event ‘heats’ were held. On the track, Shaquille Alder surprised a field of talented sprinters by winning the Under-20 men’s 400m final. He looked fairly strong from the start and seemed comfortable until the 300m mark when he kicked it up a notch to step away from the field and seal the victory for Mackenzie High School. “I confident all the time but when I got to the 300m mark I had to make sure I keep pushing until I reach the end,” he said.

Joshua Ettienne of Linden Foundation Secondary finished second while Carlon Pitt of Wisburg Secondary finished third in this race.

Winston Caesar who usually stamps his authority on the track each year did not let his fans down. He won both the long and triple jump in the Under-20 category and he also dominated in the 100m and 400m final. Though Caesar was pleased with his performance he admitted that he had some stiff competition. “There was some stiff competition out there today but I was able to win my main events,” he said. Caesar who has competed in athletics for many years said although athletes, particularly those from Linden, are not given much recognition he would continue to do his best and hope for acknowledgement in the future.

Meanwhile, the Sports Committee is yet to decide on members for the districts team which will comprise under 8 to under 20 athletes. The National Championships are set for November 9 through 13 and will include swimming, cycling, track and field events. The teacher’s championships are set for Albion, Corentyne.
