BK International Western Tigers Football Club on Friday received the promised sum of three million dollars for their penalty shootout semi-final win over last year’s Kashif and Shanghai football champions Pele. In handing over the cheque at Victoria’s Fashion on Friday, the donors said they were extremely delighted to be making such a contribution to Western Tigers, a club they have admired for its discipline and work ethic prior to and during the tournament. Receiving the cheque on behalf of the club was team captain Dillon Fraser while club president Gordon Gilhuys expressed his delight. “I am thankful to the organizations that have contributed to our victory and I am looking forward to more corporate sponsorship in the future,” Gilhuys said. Gilhuys is of the opinion that the massive contribution augurs well for the future of the game in Guyana and declared that football needed that kind of impetus to take it to the next level. “We need corporate sponsorship and when you have presidents from clubs making statements that corporate entities must not openly say they are supporting a club it would not do well for football. “Football for years has been stifled because of the fact that new sponsors were not coming forward. Now persons are coming forward to give support to clubs and you have persons not supporting this. People must be allowed to support whichever club they want to,” Gilhuys declared.

Gilhuys said Western Tigers will embark on a massive youth drive this year and part of the funds presented will go towards that programme.

He said the club’s intention was to have U-11, 13, 15, 17 and 19 teams which will serve as feeders to the senior team.

“Next year the emphasis will be on youth because most of our players are approaching the age of 30 and we need to garner the youths to take over in a structured manner,” said Gilhuys.
