Vendor and salesman in court for assaulting each other

A vendor and a salesman were placed on a total of $20,000 and $30,000 bail respectively for unlawfully assaulting each other, among other charges, yesterday.

Alexis Ashby, 37, of Iguana Street, North Ruimveldt pleaded not guilty to unlawfully assaulting Jermaine Joseph on February 3 at East La Penitence.

Ashby also pleaded not guilty to using abusive language towards Joseph on January 13 at Christiani Street, North Ruimveldt.

She also allegedly, on the same day and place, threw a lighted object to the danger of Joseph. She pleaded not guilty.

Further, it is alleged that on February 1 at North Ruimveldt Ashby made use of threatening behaviour towards Joseph while on the same day at Christiani Street, North Ruimveldt she used abusive behaviour towards Joseph. She pleaded not guilty to both charges.

Meanwhile, Joseph was charged with using of abusive language towards Ashby on January 30 at Christiani Street, North Ruimveldt. He pleaded guilty with explanation.

Joseph was also charged with threatening behaviour towards Ashby on the same day at North Ruimveldt to which he pleaded not guilty. He was also charged with using abusive language towards Ashby and he also pleaded not guilty.

In her bid for bail, Ashby’s lawyer told the court that her client’s presence in court was indicative of her presence in each appearance thereafter, and asked for reasonable bail.

Meanwhile, Joseph told the court in explaining his guilty plea that he was waiting with his girlfriend on Saturday for a bus when he saw Ashby with faeces on her face. He said people were laughing at her and he joined in.

Joseph explained that where he was waiting was in front of Ashby’s place and she told him that she was going to move him if he did not remove from in front of her property. He said she subsequently took a lighted flambeau and threw it at him “and that is how I end up using abusive language.”

Meanwhile Police Prosecutor Assistant Superintendent of Police Denise Griffith told the court that “it is clear that they have nothing to do.”  According to the facts, Griffith said, somebody had thrown faeces on Ashby’s shop and Joseph started calling her names.

Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson then changed Joseph’s guilty plea to not guilty and placed him on $20,000 bail: $10,000 for the charge of abusive behaviour and $10,000 for the charge of threatening language. He was placed on self-bail on the abusive language charge.

Ashby was placed on $10,000 bail on the assault charge, $10,000 on the throwing a dangerous object charge and another $10,000 on the threatening behaviour charge. On the abusive language and abusive behaviour charges she was placed on self-bail.

The pair is to return to Court 10 on March 2.
