Cop among five held over illicit gun

A policeman based in Georgetown is among five men held by the police after they stopped and searched a car in New Amsterdam yesterday and found an unlicensed .38 revolver and one matching round.

A police statement yesterday said that five men were arrested on Vryheid Public Road but said nothing about the policeman. Sources told Stabroek News that it is believed that this quintet has been engaged in robberies in the Bebice area.

Meanwhile, the police destroyed four marijuana-growing camps at Gateroy, Berbice River following a patrol in the area.

The police release said that a six-acre field comprising roughly 30,000 marijuana plants ranging from 1 foot to seven feet in height was found. Police also seized a weighing scale, three spray cans, two motor blowers and an air rifle.
