Taxi driver remanded over store break-in

A taxi driver was yesterday remanded to prison when he appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson charged with breaking and entering an East Bank store.

Dave Evans, 33, of Middle Road, La Penitence, pleaded not guilty when the charge was read to him.  It is alleged that on February 24 he broke and entered the store of Suresh Sookwah at Peter’s Hall, East Bank Demerara removing a digital camera, 19 bottles of perfume and a quantity of clothing; the total value being $1,620,900.

Attorney-at-Law Frank Fraser in his bail application said that the defendant was instructed, in his capacity as a taxi driver, to collect some items at a house not knowing that the articles were stolen.

The VC said neighbours saw the car in which the robbers made their escape and noted the licence plate number.

Police Prosecutor Inspec-tor Stephen Telford reiterated that the neighbours did see the vehicle being used and took the licence plate number. He added that investigations carried out by the police led to the arrest of the accused.

Telford said that under caution the defendant admitted to being involved along with his brother and another individual in the crime. To date, no articles have been recovered.

The perpetrators were able to gain entry to the store by breaking a window and cutting through the grill.

The matter was put down for March 29 at the Provi-dence Magistrate’s Court.
