Carpenter assaulted neighbour during bath -court hears

Keith Springer was refused bail yesterday when he appeared before acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson charged with indecent assault.

Springer, of East La Penitence Squatting Area, is accused of assaulting Shevanna Thompson on March 20. He pleaded not guilty.

Attorney Bernard De Santos S.C., in his bail application, told the court Springer had no previous conviction and was gainfully employed as a mason/carpenter.  He added that the incident took place at night, in Thompson’s bathroom, which has no light. Saying there is a presumption of innocence and that there are issues concerning Springer’s identification, he requested reasonable bail.

However, Thompson said that she was having a bath when Springer came into the bathroom and assaulted her by touching her about her body.  Police Prosecutor Inspector Stephen Telford asked for bail to be refused since there is a possibility of Springer interfering with witnesses in the matter. In response to De Santos’ submission about identification, Telford said there was no issue since they are neighbours. Additionally, he said there was a light on in the area leading to the bathroom.

Another hearing is set for March 29 in Court two.
