A man who claimed he did not escape but paid police officers to let him out of the Reliance Police Station, yesterday appeared in the New Amsterdam Magistrate’s Court and was remanded to prison.
Meanwhile, the policemen who he fingered are being investigated.
A week ago, Chetram Singh, 26, of Betsy Ground, Canje was taken into custody at the Reliance Police Station following an allegation of larceny. He reportedly escaped shortly after was recaptured around 10 am on Wednesday in an abandoned house at Betsy Ground.
Police sources told this newspaper that acting on a tip off, they swooped down on the house and found Singh hiding in a bedroom under a bed.
Singh, who was arrested on several occasions for similar offences, was charged with escaping from lawful custody and will also face charges for simple larceny.
