Sewnarine to lead Demerara in Inter-County tourney

National all-rounder Davanie Sewnarine will lead Demerara in the upcoming 50-over Inter-County tournament set for April 11, after selectors named a 14-woman squad on Tuesday. Sewnarine who also bowls right arm off-spin, and can bat down the order, will lead a star-studded side that includes national captain Zaheeda Samdally, national wicketkeeper June Thomas, Joann Van Sertima and Prudence Williams. The selectors have also named three standby players. South Ruimveldt Secondary School captain Lashanie Toussaint and Shinead Emerson have also found favour with the selectors. Both players have recently enjoyed good form with the bat and ball and will hopefully transition to the higher level. National players in the side will add to the talent pool particularly in the match against Berbice which includes West Indies players Erva Giddings who is a capable batter, and all rounder Shemaine Campbell. In the bowling department the economical Sewnarine will spearhead the attack and will get support from Van Sertima, Latoya Smith and Onicka Walleson.

Demerara team reads: Davanie Sewnarine (captain), Abeena Parker (vice captain), Joann Van Sertima, Shinead Emerson, June Thomas (wicketkeeper), Zaheeda Samdally, Prudence Williams, Akaza Thompson, Victoria Bacchus, Latoya Smith, Onicka Walleson, Nayesha Khan, Lashanie Toussaint and Hasena Mohamed.
