Surinamese man and Venezuelan woman fined $30,000 each for illegal entry

A Surinamese man and a Venezuelan woman were ordered to pay fines of $30,000 each and deported to their homelands when they appeared at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court for illegally entering Guyana.

The man, Jurien Blokland, and the woman, Aracelis De Tomas, both pleaded guilty to separate charges of illegal entry into Guyana when Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson read the charges to them.

On March 27, at Spring-lands, Corentyne River, Blokland, having entered Guyana by sea disembarked without the consent of an immigration officer.  And on March 31, De Tomas committed the same offence.

Blokland told the court that he came to explore Guyana, while De Tomas said that she was on her way to Venezuela when she was caught.
