Sophia man charged with wife’s murder

Godfrey Stewart, the man who allegedly slit his reputed wife’s throat before setting their Sophia home ablaze, appeared before Magistrate Judy Latchman on Wednesday at the Sparendaam Magistrates’ Court, charged with the capital offence of murder.

It is alleged that on March 11 he killed his reputed wife Jacqueline George and then set the house they shared on fire. Her charred remains were found in the rubble of the burnt house. He was not required to plea to the charge.

Subsequently, he went into hiding and days later turned himself in to the police with three stab wounds which he claimed were inflicted by George during a fight, shortly before she was killed.  He was then admitted to the Georgetown Hospital.

He was remanded and will make his next court appearance on May 11.
