The Guyana Amateur Boxing Association (GABA) National Novices Championship commence this evening at 19:00 h at the National Gymnasium, Mandela Avenue.
More than 70 fighters are expected to be on show for the two-day event. The gyms that are expected to participate in the event are Guyana Defence Force Republican, Forgotten Youth Foundation and Harpy Eagles from Georgetown; Pocket Rocket of Berbice, Port Kaituma Region 1, Ricola of East Bank Demerara and Timehri Warriors of Soesdyke.
This event comes on the heels of statements from recently appointed national coach Wincel Thomas who said that several of the boxers lacked many of the basics of the fistic sport. He was, however, adamant that with the plans that the GABA has for the resuscitation of the sport, the boxers will improve over time.
Meanwhile, the event has received support from the Sport Ministry, Demerara Distillers Limited (DDL) and GABA’s vice president Maurice Rajkumar.
