Guyana players set to receive international ratings

The Guyana Chess Federation is preparing to host a FIDE- titled chess tournament which will enable its players to receive world chess ratings.  This was not possible previously, since we were not affiliated to FIDE as an accredited member. Now that we are, we can go ahead and secure our international ratings.

Four titled international players and an international arbiter, will travel to Guyana to compete in a tournament alongside six selected Guyanese players. The arbiter will be the chief judge of the tournament. At the conclusion of the tournament, our six representatives would be given ratings according to their performances. Other local players who did not participate in this international tournament, would also get FIDE ratings when they compete with our local titled players.

Jason won this, and his other games for Guyana, although this country only placed fourth in the competition because of lost points in the team championship following losses on the lower boards.

Guyana would then become eligible to compete in FIDE-rated tournaments worldwide, and strive to gain the coveted International Master and Grandmaster title norms. This is how a country goes about the task of obtaining an International Master, or Grandmaster of Chess. The underlying factor of achieving such a distinction, however, is that our players must compete internationally.

In the meantime, the federation will continue to host its monthly tournaments. Beginning next Sunday, the annual Kei-Shar’s sponsored chess tournament for junior and senior players will commence. The tournament will be an eight-round swiss, where winners play winners and losers play losers. Two games will be played on Sunday,  and a number of prizes will be handed out to the top finishers. Participation in the tournament is open to all chess players throughout Guyana.
