Minister of Works should continue to remove structures from government reserve

Dear Editor,
I am pleased to see that the Ministry of Works continues to demolish illegal structures on the government reserve on the East Coast of Demerara. I am anticipating that the same will happen to the rum shops and beer gardens at Plaisance and the Railway Embankment junction. I also see that people keep occupying and fencing off plots of reserved land. Just recently at Plaisance a plot of land was fenced and used by the market vendors, a construction company with huge machinery, a tyre shop and rum shop, etc. These obstacles pose serious threats to commuters on the roadways.

Also some of these illegal shops harbour drunken men with their vehicles parked on the road causing traffic jams.  Schoolchildren are also seen at these beer gardens especially in Plaisance.

The surroundings of these businesses are always littered with all sorts of waste, including broken bottles.

I once again commend the Minister and this ministry and hope he will eliminate structures on the government’s reserve.

Yours faithfully,
Khemraj Narine
