Karate team does well in T/dad

Guyana was well represented at the Tiger Claw Interna-tional Sport Karate Cham-pionship held in Trinidad and Tobago last weekend.

The four-man team returned with five first place trophies, a second place trophy, a third place trophy and a fourth place medal.

The karatekas who represented the Guyana Amateur Karate Association (GAKA) were Julian Amerally, Robert Pearson and Nicholas Kumar.

They were accompanied by instructor, Ganesh Babulall, who also participated in the event.

The team competed against participants from the host country, Barbados, St. Lucia, Grenada, Venezuela, Canada, and USA

In the Masters division, Babulall won the traditional kata and placed third in the freestyle kata.

Pearson participating in the 18 – 35 years old category, won first place in kumite, second place in block breaking and fourth in traditional kata. Amerally, competing in the 14 – 15 category, amassed three first place trophies in kumite, traditional kata and freestyle kata.

The stream of wins qualified the karatekas for the Champion of Champions tournament to be held in October.

Karatekas who placed first and second in the tournament will return to contest the finals.

The four were sponsored by Builders Lumber Yard, General Industrial Supplies, the Industry Assembly of God Church and the Forestry Commission. The team would also like to extend its gratitude to the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports for its support.
