The Guyana Sugar Corpora-tion (GuySuCo) yesterday signed an agreement with officials from giant supermarket chain Combe Markt that will see local sugar re-entering the Surinamese market after a two-year absence.

The value of the deal and the period over which the sugar will be exported to Suriname were not released by GuySuCo in its official statement and spokesman Romel Roopnarine told Stabroek News via telephone that at the time the deal was signed “those details were not forthcoming.”

Roopnarine explained that he would have to contact Marketing Manager Roxanne Greenidge to request further details on the agreement.

The agreement was inked at GuySuCo’s Ogle head office. Present during the signing were Combe Markt Managing Director Sharmila Lowtoe, and from GuySuCo Chief Executive Officer Paul Bhim, Deputy Chief Execu-tive Officer Rajaindra Singh, Marketing Manager Roxanne Greenidge and Shipping and Logistic Manager Dexter Cox.

Combe Markt, according to GuySuCo, is one of the largest supermarket chains in Suriname and it controls over 25% of the market share in retail sugar sales. This partnership, GuySuCo reported Lowtoe as saying, is in line with efforts by the two countries to significantly improve their relationship and integration.

Lowtoe, GuySuCo said, alluded to the fact that “her company has been doing business with GuySuCo for over fifteen years” and stated that she “was very pleased that the high quality sugar from Guyana will once again be entering the Surinamese market much to the delight of local consumers there.”

Meanwhile, Chief Execu-tive Officer Bhim in his remarks indicated that the agreement serves to further highlight the regional and international demand for GuySuCo’s sugar.
