Making it easier: Cell phone giant Digicel yesterday made life much easier for Dawnetta Mc Lean and her family when they offered her a scholarship for the duration of her secondary school life. While the company did not disclose the monetary value of the scholarship, its Head of Marketing Jacqueline James said it will last for five years. The presentation by Digicel comes after the publication of Dawnetta’s resilience in the July 18 edition of this newspaper where it was reported that the child travelled for miles from Soesdyke to West Ruimveldt Primary, some days hardly had anything to eat and suffered two bouts of illness during her final year at the school. In the end the child triumphed all adversities gained a place at the country’s premier secondary school, Queen’s College. James said they were touched by Dawnetta’s story and said: “We are not only rewarding her for her great success but also giving her an opportunity to excel even further.” She said the child defied the odds and her success “can be an inspiration for many children in her situation.” In this photograph James (left) awards the scholarship to Dawnetta (right) in the presence of her mother Dawn. Since the story was published the child received a lot of assistance from persons local and overseas including a brand new laptop from the Mark Benschop Foundation.
