Sadeek and Guyanese drama

It is very significant to note that in his continuing programme of theatrical productions to highlight Indian culture in Guyana, director Neaz Subhan, on behalf of the Indian Arrival Committee, produced three plays by Sheik Sadeek.  It is significant because of the importance of Sadeek to the promotion of those components of Guyanese culture that are Indian, and very much above that, Sadeek’s importance to the development of Guyanese drama; that is, the whole of Guyanese drama without reference to ethnicity.
The history behind this is very interesting.  Subhan’s first attempts at rekindling Indian theatre on the Guyanese stage involved the production of Neil Simon plays with partial adaptation and Hindi titles, such as Dho Bhai.  He graduated from that imitative phase to the full production of Indian plays such as Tulsidas, then more contemporary dramas and the transfiguration of
