You’re supposed to know

Early in my reacquaintance with driving in Guyana, I was introduced to a phrase, numbingly illogical, that will become very familiar very quickly to anyone coming to grips with the traffic rules in the country.  Above all the things you need to learn, this overarching phrase is constantly used by persons, struggling to explain these illogical traffic situations; cornered, with nowhere to go, they will trot out the argument clincher: “You’re supposed to know.”

Here’s a good example:  Driving north on the Back Road, at two different locations you will come to a traffic light where traffic is supposed to divide into two lanes: one going north and one turning east. The hitch is that there are no
