Was never under consideration for the presidency of Guyana

Dear Editor,

The letters in SN on March 8 by Sasenarine Singh and Malcolm Harripaul merely support my contention that these men are trying to destroy the good name of President Cheddi.
Editor, as to the comments AFC spokesman Singh made about me in relation to the PPP and Mrs Janet Jagan, all I have to say is that he is an inventor of fabrications and distortions. I have stood, over the years, fast to the principles I stood up for when I left the PPP, and I still believe in shared governance for the good of this country. I also believe in democracy where the fundamentals are based on a truly free press and the government owns none of the media except an information service – no government TV, radio or newspaper; where there is no party list system but instead constituency politics and the abolition of the executive presidency; and where there is a total revision of our constitution so the watchword is more democracy and less government as well as fair and free elections (with international observers). These principles apply to democracy within the PPP also. Mr Singh through some fantasy he conjured up would like the public to believe that I somehow  was disinherited from the leadership of the PPP, when in fact I brought all of my political positions before that party leadership before I resigned my seat in Parliament, and it was clear to me that the PPP at that time and up until this day, was not interested in the political questions I raised.

At no time, as Mr Singh asserts, was I ever considered for the presidency of Guyana by Mrs Jagan and her comrades, because in fact they knew that I was a strong antagonist of communism and would unravel the socialist-communist  knots which still bind the PPP leadership to the past.

Editor, in reference to Mr Harripaul’s letter, all I have to say is that, at one time, not too long ago, the ideology which President Cheddi followed was prevalent throughout the world, and the PNC and WPA followed some form of Marxism, but Mr Harripaul wants to pin everything on Jagan for some reason. No matter what he tries to pin on Jagan, it won’t work. President Cheddi left his mark for his honesty, selflessness and patriotism in the cause of Guyana.

Yours faithfully,
Cheddi (Joey) Jagan (Jr)
