Is Sterling Products Limited too complacent?

LUCAS STOCK INDEX The LSI increased slightly with a gain of less than half of one percent in trading this week. The stocks of Banks DIH (DIH), Demerara Distillers Limited (DDL) and Republic Bank Limited (RBL) traded this week. Only the stocks of DIH showed any positive movement with a positive gain of 2.59 percent. As a result, the index exceeds the yield of the risk-free Treasuries due to mature in December 2011 by over five percentage points.

Not too long from now Sterling Products Limited (SPL) will convene its Fifty-Sixth Annual General meeting to consider the performance of the company in 2010 and deliberate on plans perhaps already underway for 2011.  While the general public has to wait to hear the results of the performance of SPL in 2010, its 663 shareholders on record probably already know what to expect when they meet shortly from now.  The company, which is part of the Beharry Group of companies, has been turning in impressive returns on increasing sales and lower costs in recent years.  The year 2008 saw a 49 percent increase in pre-tax profits while 2009 saw a whopping 233 percent increase.  Fuel is a critical input in the production
