APNU Protesters
APNU protests over constitutional rights: Six representatives from the APNU [A Partnership for National Unity] yesterday picketed outside the Ministry of Home Affairs, in protest at the breach of constitutional rights. Speaking on the group’s behalf was Lurlene Nestor (extreme right), who also shared her personal experience as one of the reasons for the protest. According to Nestor, a few weeks ago during the Ministry of Agriculture’s Grow More Food Campaign at the Square of the Revolution (Cuffy Square) she had joined the line to collect seeds and other items that were being distributed, when she was upbraided by a Corporal, who she said “grabbed me by the shoulder and told me I had to leave”. The woman continued that she asked the officer the reason for her having to leave, to which she said he responded, “you’re wearing the wrong shirt”. Nestor said at the time she was wearing a jersey with a photo of APNU’s presidential candidate David Granger on it. “I’ve since written a letter to the Commissioner of Police on the issue but he has not since responded,” she said. The other topic, which the protestors highlighted as being of major concern, was that of 18-year-old Kevin Simon being incarcerated for two weeks for allegedly showing his middle finger to the presidential convoy. “We are going to fight with all our might. If action is not taken in this country, it will be taken elsewhere,” Nestor stated.
