Presidential system for Suriname

(De Ware Tijd) PARAMARIBO – There is the possibility that during this administration, Suriname will switch to a completely presidential-system. Based on reality, this is most likely; it only has yet to be decided which variant of this system will be most practical for the country.

At the moment, there is still a fusion of the presidential and the parliamentary-systems.

This is one of the most important tasks the constitutional commission “Revision Constitution” that was installed at the Presidential Palace by President Desi Bouterse yesterday. According to commission-chairman Sam Polanen, they are going to consider everything in order to decide precisely what needs to be revised. The commission consists solely of technocrats as politics is kept outside. Finally, Parliament will have to approve of the possible amendments. Bouterse assured that reformation of the Constitution will take place via existing democratic structures but added that the commission’s conclusions will not be binding though they will help decide the final decision.
