(Barbados Nation) Not even death could separate Cecil and Joan Fitt.

Just three hours after Cecil died at his Rendezvous Ridge, Christ Church home last week, his wife of 52 years also passed away in her bed.

One of the couple’s sons, Peter, said on Monday his father had been ailing from cancer for some time and his mother had been constantly at her husband’s bedside taking care of him with the help of professional nursing services.

The end came for Cecil at 9:30 p.m. on January 30. Three hours later, his wife was dead, victim of an apparent heart attack which their son believed may have resulted from the stress of taking care of his father and finally facing the reality of his passing.

“The neighbour told me she had put mom to bed after dad had passed and later she heard her call out saying she had this terrible pain in her chest,” Peter reported.

By the time the family friend reached the bedroom, Joan had already succumbed.

Peter said his parents enjoyed a close, loving relationship.

Guyanese-born Cecil met his future wife in Trinidad where she was training to be a BWIA air hostess and the couple was married at St Patrick’s Roman Catholic Cathedral here in 1959.

They had five children, Peter, Stephen, Mary, Jennifer and Richard, all of whom live overseas, but who visited their parents regularly.

Cecil was once managing director of Barba-dos Fire and General Insurance Company which is now part of Sagicor.
