Mc Donald routs Guyana to give J/ca upper hand

Brian Sattaur

FOURSQUARE, Barbados,  CMC – A three-wicket burst from giant fast bowler James McDonald immediately after lunch proved to be the catalyst for Jamaica’s strong first-day showing against Guyana in their second round contest of the Regional Under-19 three-day Championship here  yesterday.

The Guyanese, who reached 114 without loss after winning the toss and opting to bat first on a placid pitch, were dismissed for 164 after losing ten wickets for just 50 runs at the Foursquare Oval. Jamaica, in reply, finished the day on 41 without loss with captain Oshane Walters and Odaine McCatty playing cautiously to the close. Openers Brian Sattaur (74) and Tagenarine Chanderpaul (34) ensured Guyana were comfortably placed on 82 without loss at lunch en route to their century opening stand.

McDonald, however, a towering six-foot, seven-inch right arm bowler, broke the partnership and accounted for the first three dismissals on the way to final figures of four for 19 from 13 overs.

His main support came from off-spinner Delbert Gayle (3-30) and fellow-pacer Christopher Powell (2-25), with off-spinner Walters chipping in with the wicket of first-round century-maker Chandrapaul Hemraj for 11.

Sattaur and Chanderpaul played flawlessly during the morning session with the former, who registered his fifty after 103 minutes with seven fours and a six off 67 balls, being the main aggressor. Chanderpaul was first to depart, caught at mid-off in the 49th over mis-timing a lofted drive off McDonald for 34.
His dismissal sparked a procession to and from the pavilion by Guyana’s batsmen.

Sattaur followed in McDonald’s next over and the 18-year old quick finished off his devastation with the scalp of Shemron Hetmeyer (6) whom he had well-caught by Tristan Coleman. Coleman had earlier dropped Hetmeyer off the same bowler. There was to be no recovery for Guyana as the innings collapsed spectacularly.
