Windwards dismiss Guyana cheaply

Ricardo Adams

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados,  CMC – An aggressive, undefeated half-century from Tarryk Gabriel put the Windward Islands in sight of first innings points over Guyana on the opening day of their fourth round Regional Under-19 Championship clash here yesterday.

Shawn Pereira

Gabriel stroked 71 to fire his side to 127 for three at the close, in reply to Guyana’s paltry first innings total of 147 all out at Queen’s Park.

The Windwards lost the early wicket of Gordon Pope without a run on the board, and the vital wicket of Jerlani Robinson for seven, to stumble to 14 for two.

However, they recovered quickly thanks to a superb third wicket stand of 109 between Gabriel and the left-handed opener Keone George who got 44.

Both batsmen took the attack to the Guyanese bowlers and before George was unfortunately out hit wicket attempting a big shot off off-spinner Shawn Pereira.

His innings included one four and two sixes in 142 minutes off 111 balls.

However, Gabriel continued aggressively, reaching his fifty off 94 balls with five fours and one six.

He has so far counted six fours and two sixes in an innings consuming 123 minutes and 115 balls.

Earlier, Guyana got 40 from Shimron Hetmeyer, which included  three fours and one six, while Ricardo Adams got 37, with five fours and a six, as they were sent in.

Opening fast bowler Shaquille Browne claimed two for 24.
