The working class must live the clean, lean life and take control of their future

Dear Editor,

The old people always say man appoints and man shall disappoint, so we remain baffled that persons expected anything different from the Wolfe Commission of Enquiry.  This commission was conceived by Joseph Harmon (APNU) and Dr Luncheon (PPP) on a foundation of minimal transparency.  Even with such material deficiencies, all right-minded Guyanese lived in hope, expecting justice.

We want to take this opportunity to distinguish Mr Nigel Hughes, (the people’s Senior Counsel) for his efforts and resourcefulness in advancing this struggle to reveal the fundamental grievances of the people for all to see. The people have done their part, we leave the rest up to prayers, and justice shall be delivered.

However, even in prayer we must remain mobilized and not make the mistakes of the past by following the instructions of the PNC/PPP to disengage from the struggle resulting in limited progress for the poor and the working class.  All that matters to them is the political preservation and advancement of a few.

Since the murder of Rodney, the people of Guyana finally have alternative leaders like Nagamootoo, Hughes, Ramjattan and Solomon, among others, who practise the politics of principle, and thus they should remain militant.  However, with militancy comes responsibility and the militants must never tolerate any acts of violence against innocent people. This means they must carefully screen their comrades on the ground to weed out all agents provocateurs.

But to really rock the PPP boat, it is time the working class became more proactive in living the lean, mean and clean life and taking full control of their future in spite of the oppressive circum-stances.  Guyanese have seen an average 13% increase in food prices between 2009 and 2011.  Can you imagine what would happen if more of that food were grown in their own yards with their own sweat and hard work? Based on our estimates, if that 13% were re-deployed to savings and education, that would be some $500 million re-deployed under their full control, while at the same time the working class would be eating healthier foods, getting some exercise and spending less on medical bills.  This is economic emancipation from the PPP.  If the people of Region 10 can work with companies in India who are using lateritic bauxite material for building blocks, they can save 20% of the nation’s cement import which works out to some $778 million, some of which can then be funnelled into their community as real income.  The sand is there, the lateritic bauxite material is there, the Indian High Commission is there – it can be done. That is some $200-$300 million in new wages for people from Region 10.

So the solutions are there, all they have to do is work around those political entities seeking to stifle their will.  It is
time to remain militant, resourceful and spend less on non-productive PPP/APNU-sponsored  bubble sessions and more on their children’s education and saving more.  It is time the fathers of Guyana stood up and were counted.

Many persons are coming forward and are bringing evidence and information about what is going on. They tell about their own particular experiences — as housewives, taxi drivers and so on. They all come and give information with the necessary detail, so that we can get a total picture of what the social, economic and political life is like in this country today.

That is why we can show up the PPP and PNC every day; the chains are broken.  All we have to do is stay the course, spend only on necessities and stop following the rum and fete put on by the PPP/APNU and focus on the children and the family.

Yours faithfully,
Asquith Rose
