Banks Malta Supreme Cycle Road Race in B/ce tomorrow

The Guyana Tennis Association (GTA) will this morning commence its staging of the twice yearly inter schools 10s lawn tennis tournament. The event is open to aspiring tennis players from various primary schools and will be held between 9am and 12.30pm. The competition will be a round robin one with the use of red balls and mini courts. According to a press release from the GTA, the “Tennis 10s programme was developed by the ITF during 2002 as an element of their ‘Play and Stay’ initiative which is geared to increase the level of participation and speed of development through the use of softer balls that are red, orange and green and an increased number of competitions. “The GLTA,” the release added, “has been supporting this initiative locally since 2006 with coaches visiting primary schools monthly to assist PE teachers with the coordination of in-school competitions that lead up to this event.” Some nine teams are expected to participate in the Under 10 categories. They are Marian Academy, St. Pius Primary, Enterprise Primary, West Ruimveldt Primary, St. Agnes Primary, New Guyana School, Mae’s Under 12, Park Players Tennis Club and Non-Pareil Tennis Club. National Junior Coordinator and Coach of the Tennis 10s programme, Shelly Daly-Ramdyhan said that she was heartened by the efforts made by primary school Physical Education teachers to keep the initiative alive in the schools and expects a good turnout for the competition.

Berbice cyclists will tomorrow compete in the Flying Ace Cycle Club/ Banks DIH Limited inaugural Banks Malta Supreme 40-mile cycle road race.

The event will commence in front of the Banks DIH Limited New Amsterdam Branch at Main and New Streets, New Amsterdam, proceed to Adventure on the Corentyne before returning to Main and  New Streets for the finish.
