GECOM says APNU concerns will be considered extensively

The Guyana Elections Commission today said that concerns raised yesterday by A Partnership for National Unity about the quality of last November’s general elections will be extensively considered by the Commission.

In a release, GECOM said it had been assured by APNU that following its examination of the Statements of Poll its findings would be presented to the Commission. GECOM said this has not been done up to now. APNU said yesterday that its examination of the SoPs found sufficient misconduct to cast doubt on the winner of the presidency.

Its statement follows:

“The Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) has noted, with serious concerns, the issues which were publicized by A Partnership for National Unity (APNU), pertaining to this Party’s examination of Statements of Poll (SoPs) in GECOM’s possession relative to the 2011 General and Regional Elections.

“In this regard, it is essential that we point out that, at the time that the Commission agreed to make the SoPs available to the APNU for scrutiny, this Party had given the undertaking to provide GECOM with the details of its findings.  Notwithstanding the APNU’s public pronouncements, to date GECOM has received no official documentation on this matter from the Partnership.

“In view of the serious nature of this matter, GECOM takes this opportunity to give the assurance to all Stakeholders that all of the concerns raised by the APNU will be considered extensively at the level of the Commission and its Secretariat in a timely manner.  Immediately thereafter, the Commission will make a total and comprehensive response addressing all of the stated concerns.

“Accordingly, it is expected that the Commission will be in receipt of the documented detailed findings of the APNU, since this is fundamental to the Commission’s consideration of and response to the Party’s publicized concerns.”
