DUBAI, United Arab Emirates, CMC – West Indies captain Darren Sammy and exciting off-spinner Sunil Narine have shot up the latest International Cricket Council’s players’ rankings after strong performances in the just concluded one-day series against Australia.
In the rankings released on Monday, Sammy jumped 47 spots in the batting to 72nd while Narine leapt a whopping 84 places to 58th in the bowling.
Sammy, a lower order batsman and medium pacer, finished the series with 160 runs at an average of 53.
His scintillating career-best 84 in Sunday’s final match at Beausejour Cricket Ground threatened to hand the West Indies victory before they eventually went down by 30 runs. Narine, meanwhile, who was the Windies’ leading bowler in the series with 11 wickets at an average of 14 apiece and an economy rate of 3.32, is now in the top 60 of the bowlers’ rankings.
The 23-year-old Narine, who made his international debut last December and has played only eight ODIs, was outstanding in keeping the brakes on the Aussies scoring throughout the series.
Sammy also had good fortune in the bowlers’ rankings, rising five places to 45th. He is now 16th in the all-rounders circle following an a leap of 18 spots.
Exciting all-rounder Andre Russell was also a big mover, jumping 26 places to 67th while off-spinner Marlon Samuels rose 14 spots to 97th and pacer Kemar Roach, who also finished the series with 11 wickets, jumped nine places to 17th.
The big-hitting Kieron Pollard, who smashed the only century of the series to lead the Windies batting with 222 runs at an average of 55, was also up 17 places in the batting rankings to 33rd.
