Police said Tannis was stabbed with his own knife in a house at San Fernando Street, around 10.30 p.m on Monday after an argument with the female suspect, a nursing student.

Police were told Tannis and the suspect had an altercation and his knife fell to the ground. The suspect allegedly picked up the knife and stabbed him.

At the Tannis family home yesterday his uncle, Shawn Tannis, said though his nephew had broken off his relationship with the suspect she still frequented the house.

“She (the suspect) used to come here and cook and bake with my wife. Then sometime last year, there was an incident here where he got a phone call, and then I heard them arguing. After she (the suspect) took the phone and mashed it up to pieces.”

Shawn Tannis’s wife, Michelle Ramcharitar, said: “She (the suspect) told another relative that she branded him with an iron. For simple things, she would get angry. I thought they broke up. Then last night we heard that he got stabbed.”

Shawn said on Monday his nephew stayed at home, but received several phone calls and messages from the female suspect, and then left home sometime after 9 p.m.

“He would not listen when people talked to him. If he knew he was not supposed to go there, that is exactly where he would go,” said the uncle.

An autopsy was expected to be conducted on his body yesterday at the Forensic Science Centre in St James.
