Yesterday, the New Amsterdam Hospital presented new wheelchairs to three children with disabilities, two of whom attend the Special Needs School in Vryman’s Erven, New Amsterdam. The wheelchairs were made available by the Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.

At a simple handing over held at the Special Needs School, the wheelchairs were presented to 6 year old Ajay Deonarine and Marica Darlington (15 yrs), students of the school, and 9 year old Rawle Campbell of Port Mourant, Corentyne. The recipients, whose disabilities can be classified as severe had their old wheelchairs replaced with new ones, giving them some level of mobility so they can better take part in community life on an equal level as others.

In presenting the wheelchairs, CEO of the hospital,  Allan Johnson urged the teachers, parents and guardians of the recipients to help in the care and maintenance of the equipment.

Each recipient was fitted into the new chair by a technician attached to the hospital and those in attendance were given tips on how to assist the differently-able children to manoeuvre in and out of the chairs.
