Two houses were burnt to the ground last night in Lusignan, East Coast Demerara.

The fire started in a two-storey house and spread to one-storey house from which it was separated by a fence.

The cause of the fire is unknown at this moment but residents said it may have been caused by lit diyas.

The fire occurred around 7.30 pm at North Market Road, Lusignan.

Shanta Motilall, the owner of the one-storey house, said she heard her neighbours hollering “fire fire!” By the time she got out of her house, the fire had already spread to her yard and engulfed it. One fire truck was at the scene but firefighters were unable to put out the flames because they had no water.
