U.S. Marine Corps General John F. Kelly, Commander of the United States Southern Command (SOUTHCOM) based in Miami, Florida, visited Guyana November 4-5, 2014. SOUTHCOM is responsible for overseeing all U.S. military operations in Latin America and the Caribbean including contingency planning, operations, and security cooperation.
A release from the US embassy said that Chief of Staff Brigadier-General Mark Phillips hosted General Kelly at Camp Stephenson and viewed a sharpshooting demonstration. General Kelly spoke to the troops and applauded their commitment to the Guyana Defence Force. In this US Embassy photo General Kelly is (fifth from right) with GDF troops.
