, Jamaica, CMC – Leeward Islands Hurricanes showed glimpses of what they are capable of but it was all a little too late, as Jamaica Franchise closed in on victory in their fourth round encounter of the WICB Professional Cricket League here yesterday.

At the close of the penultimate day at Sabina Park, Jamaica were 160 for four, requiring a mere 35 runs to win their third game of the new first class season.

However, the Leewards created some anxiety in the hosts’ camp, reducing them to 23 for three before opener John Campbell, who finished unbeaten on 63, helped revive the innings in two key partnerships.

He put on 72 for the fourth wicket with captain Tamar Lambert who made a busy 45 from 43 balls, and then added a further 65 with seasoned all-rounder Dave Bernard Jr, who was unbeaten on 33 at the close.

It was veteran fast bowler Gavin Tonge who caused the consternation for Leewards, knocking over Horace Miller (3) and Andre McCarthy (1) in quick succession, en route to taking two for 37.

Tonge’s performance epitomised the Leewards’ earlier valiant batting effort which saw them rattle up an admirable 313 all out.

Resuming at 155 for six, the Leewards were carried by an aggressive 95 off 94 balls from the burly 21-year-old right-hander Rahkeem Cornwall, in his debut first class match.

He received support from wicketkeeper Jahmar Hamilton who got 44 and Jeremiah Louis who hit 22.

Cornwall added 60 for the sixth wicket with Hamilton before putting on a further 66 for the seventh wicket with Louis.

Off-spinner Lambert (3-32), left-arm spinner Nikita Miller (3-55) and leg-spinner Damian Jacobs (3-74) all finished with three wickets apiece.
